Day One - Build A Linux Box

Why do I want to build my own Linux From Scratch box? Basically, I've always have been able to build a Linux computer, but I have never used it. So, I feel that if I compile my own box, maybe, just maybe I'll use it more. And then there is work. Most of our primary servers run some sort of Unix on them and I can only get so far using ls, mv, cp and a very limited knowledge of vi. I also came came across a great deal for a Compaq Armada M700 laptop with 500MB RAM and a 12GB hard drive. But more importantly, I bought it from a Unix/Linux nut who said that this laptop would run Linux. So, in my non-Linux mind, I'm set. I guess I'll see later.

Day One's task was to install a version of Linux on my new used laptop. Simply put, you cannot install LFS without a version of Linux to do it. I chose Mandrake 8.2 because I had the CDs lying around at home. Mandriva is currently at version 10.2, but for what I need, v8.2 will hopefully be fine.

The install goes without a hitch and I install the developer version as requested in Chapter 1 of LFS 6.0. Right now, the laptop cannot access the internet due to the fact that I built it at work and I didn't want the internet connection to sidetrack me. I know, I know the lack of an internet connection will have to change.
